How:
Press and hold R to hop into a power slide. If you are turning left, go from pressing left on the D-pad to right (and vice versa if turning right). A blue 'fire' will appear at the bottom of your kart. Do it again, and the fire will turn red. When it's red, let go of R to get a turbo boost. Mastering this technique is near essential in Mario Kart DS.

at the start there is a zig-zag road and near the top are some boxes. turn left STRAIGHT AFTER and you will climb up a slope. at the top there is a box. inside will be 3 boosts,1 boost or a star every time.
