To get past zombies with ease you must be near a staircase. When you need to get past a zombie wait for it to start going down the stairs. Then just run past it as all it will do is throw up. This causes you little to no damage and it will make no attempt to grab you so you easily pass it and carry on with your game even with no ammo!
